The Oldest Flame Burns Brightest
I was going to be late for my train. I pushed through the milling crowdsof window shoppers, parents with pushchairs and business more intent on their mobile phones than on moving out of my way. A stroppy looking teen girl with earrings down to her shoulders glared at me as I pushed past her, she started mouthing obscenities but I ignored her, intent on only getting to the station. I eased my slim frame through another gap in the crowd but was snagged back. My bag had caught a young woman’s briefcase, knocking it out of her hands. And spilling its contents onto the floor. She bent down to retrieve it as I looked around. I knelt down to help her as the stroppy girl and her yobby mates guffawed. “I’m really sorry” I said to the young woman who’s briefcase I hadknocked. Her long brown hair had cascaded over her face so I couldn’t tell what she looked like. I gave her an appraising look. Her black business suit, obviously tailored, showed off her slim body to perfection. It looked as if she’d been poured into it. “No, it was my fault, I wasn’t looking where I was going.” She replied, her voice slightly haughty but likeable. It reminded me of someone. I handed her some papers, which she shuffled into some semblance or order and placed in the case, clasping the lid shut. “Nothing important I hope”, I said, rising to me feet. I offered a handto her which she accepted. I helped her up and froze as I saw her face. I saw her eyes open wide in recognition, mirroring my own shock. Someone nudged me in the back, snapping me out of my dumbness. “Uh, hi” I said like an idiot to the girl who had haunted my dreams forthe past six years. “Mark,” she gasped, “how have you been?” “I’ve been ok, all things considered” I said, remembering the last timei’d seen her. That awful day when she’s chosen her career over me. She seemed to realise how much it still hurt me. She looked down and blushed. “Mark, i’m really sorry about what happened. I just felt it was theright decision at the time.” “I know, I know, you said at the time you didn’t mean to hurt me,” Isaid, a bit more vindictively than i’d intended. I saw her stiffen. “Shit, i’m sorry Zoe. I didn’t mean it to come out like that. It just still hurts, you know?” She relaxed when I apologised and looked up at my face. God, she was even more beautiful than I remembered. Her slightly equine face framed perfectly by her long, thick, brown hair which she let hang loosely down her back. Her brown eyes twinkled mischievously as an impish grin creased her mouth. “Still haven’t got over me then?” I smirked. “Doubt I ever will, if i’m honest! You look great by the way.Seems like you made the right decision after all.” “Yeah, i’m head of department now. You remember the company I wasworking at, right?” I nodded. “Does it leave much time for other things?” “Sometimes,” she winked at me, “I have some free time now actually, ifyou’re free.” I looked at my watch. I’d already missed my train so I figured I could spend some time with Zoe. “Sure.” We headed over to a bar for a quiet drink. It wasn’t busy and I was justglad to be out of the hustle and bustle of the city centre. I ordered a beer and she had a Tia Maria and coke. We set in a comfy seat in an alcove out of the way and chatted about things. Eventually the talk turned to relationships. I’d had a few girls since her but nothing major. As she told me of her string of affairs I drank in the sight of her. Her jacket clung to her body, showing off her ample cleavage. It seemed strange to see her with tits that big. When we’d dated she’d only been an A cup, small but perfectly formed. She’d obviously had enlargement surgery and was now at least a C cup. They were still… Read the rest of The Oldest Flame Burns Brightest
